One of the great undiscovered (bands) in contemporary moody effects-driven rock... an absolute gorgeous beauty Big Takeover Magazine A sparkling, delightful and varied blend of shoegaze, indie and drone pop... a glorious waterfall of embracing melodies that are cleverly bedded in a sea of hazy, psychedelic and yearning champagne Clank For Breakfast A trip wrapped in a dense stereo wall of sound.. an indispensable treat for lovers of shoegaze and post punk deserving of praise The Blog That Celebrates Itself Schoolkids Records has announced they will release the new Slowness album, entitled 'Berths'The album was produced by Monte Vallier (Weekend, The Soft Moon, Wax Idols). Side A was engineered by Dave Voigt (Luna, John Cale, Yo La Tengo, Alex Chilton) at his Beyond Notes studio in Brooklyn. Side B was done with Vallier at Ruminator Audio in San Francisco. This release follows up their 2014 album 'How to Keep from Falling off a Mountain' and 2013 album'For Those Who Wish to See the Glass Half Full'.Slowness runs mostly mid-tempo, sometimes fast and occasionally slow. As for this new record, it is purposefully slow, sounding like a hybrid between classic Slowdive, early-Cure and mid-period Neil Young. Often labelled shoegaze or dream pop with elements of slowcore, psych rock and even Krautrock, this music is perhaps best referred to as drone-pop. Imagine Spacemen 3 teaming up with Murmur-era R.E.M. with female harmonies. This is a very personal record. Its taken a while to make for several reasons. When we started recording during the summer of 2014, we knew wanted a slower, heavier record to reflect the current American grain, says Geoffrey Scott. We tend to think everythings gone bad since the last election and sometimes forget that that election was 30 years in the making. So, we set out to capture that, but then the whole concept probably took a turn when Julie and I decided to end our 11-year relationship as a couple. So, the political became blurred with the personal, and the lyrics probably reflect that. The first single and video, 'Rose' will be released on April 3. The band will tour throughout the United States in the summer and fall of 2019.

In this age of the Darwinian superheros-an entertainer is supposed to do it all, effortlessly. With only so much talent spread oh-so-thin, of course, the ranks are now replenished with the talentless-a bunch of people who can't sing, captivate the attention of a national audience by singing badly, after which they are scolded for not being able to sing. Entertainment? It sounds like a penal colony. There are alternatives. Saviors, even. Four of them, the Four Norsemen of the Apocalypse, come to liberate the living and the brain-dead. The Disciplines. Three Norwegians, ex-members of Nordic pop success story Briskeby, and one American, Ken Stringfellow, whose extensive resume' includes founding one of the 90's most critically acclaimed bands, The Posies; touring worldwide with R.E.M., and providing terawatts of energy and talent to artists such as Big Star, Lagwagon, Snow Patrol and Neil Young. The Disciplines shoot from the hip and aim for the head. SMOKING KILLS is snarly, but catchy; direct, but not dumb; winky but not snarky. The songs race by in brutal efficiency, and within the garage-y production you might miss the delicate smattering of wordplay.

Laugh In The Dark [Digipak]

ON SALE $15.98 CD: $5.00 Buy

MP3 Album: $9.99 Download

Eleven full-lengths, four EPs, three compilations and one live album into the game, Tommy Keeneis in the midst of a creative roll that, in the space of just six years, has yielded four studio albums; five, if you count 2010 career overview Tommy Keene You Hear Me: A Retrospective 1983-2009. The rock savant's new offering, Laugh in the Dark, is the latest in a fruitful partnership with North Carolina's Second Motion Records label, due out September 4, 2015, and comprises ten fresh Keene nuggets meticulously assembled over the course of six months, a period in which his "unobvious covers" record Excitement at Your Feet saw release to unanimous critical acclaim. Laugh in the Dark, while characterized as always by Keene's distinctive flair for melodic guitar-driven rock and brawny power pop, marks a subtle shift in the artist's songwriting modus operandi in that unlike previously, the material is all of recent vintage. As he explains, "There were always songs left over from the last project or ideas that hadn't been fleshed out. What I've done in the past before starting to write for a new record would be to demo a cover or resurrect an old song of mine that I liked but never made the final cut for an album. But all the songs on Laugh in the Dark were started and finished last year from April through October. I started with a completely fresh slate on this one." With the arrival of Laugh in the Dark Tommy Keene offers yet more evidence that he is like an athlete rediscovering his prime. Only in this artist's case, he never left it. Incidentally, the album title comes from a ride at an amusement park on the outskirts of his old stomping ground of Washington D.C. The same park where the cover photo for 1984's Places That Are Gone was shot. "See, I am consistent!" he concludes, smiling at the memory.

Happy Abandon

Facepaint

ON SALE $15.98 CD: $5.00 Buy

MP3 Album: $9.99 Download

Forming in early 2015, the members of Happy Abandon were hardly strangers. Operating in the same circles that are the cogs of any small, tightly knit scene, Vance, Ellis, and Waits had known each other for years before as students at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Within a few weeks of first playing together, they worked their way onto bills at local shows and by years end Happy Abandon was hitting the road, touring through nearly every state east of Texas and Canada. It was at SXSW that the band initially hooked up with North Carolina music denizen and future label head Stephen Judge, playing multiple slots at his annual SXSW party. From there a relationship was born that would eventually lead to Judges offering Happy Abandon a recording contract via his freshly re-branded label Schoolkids Records. The band continued to write, to tour, and to fine-tune their performances when, in late 2016, they suffered the unexpected loss of three dear friends in three separate incidences. In dealing with these heartbreaking premature deaths, in concert with the trials and travails of everyday life, the songs began to pour out en masse, with subjects ranging from personal loss to abandonment to homelessness - which singer Peter Vance suffered for a stint - to heartbreak to the indomitable power of will. It was through this lens that the band began to see this new set of songs on a grander perspective and began to realize that the wider concept behind their music was the idea that a person needs to feel life, to experience it in every facet, to feel as many emotions as possible, to completely immerse themselves in whatever emotion they may be experiencing, and how, in an effort to protect ourselves, we all tend to hide behind masks, or more appropriately, some kind of facepaint. Vance, who readily admits that he slips behind his own masks on a regular basis, began to see these songs as a vehicle by which to reveal what's behind his facepaint. Writing furiously, Happy Abandon soon found themselves with a batch of the best songs they'd yet written and soon decamped to the tiny hamlet Macon, North Carolina (population 116), where Jason Merritt's lake house studio sits on the shores of Lake Gaston, to create their album. Within a week they emerged with the ten songs that would become Facepaint, their debut long player, and found their brand of genre bending art music with deep-rooted pop sensibilities more finely honed than ever before. Working with Merritt acting as co-producer, Jamie Candiloro working as mixing engineer, and frequent collaborator Alex Thompson handling keyboards and string arrangements, Happy Abandon captured at once their high flair, their foreboding sensibility and their warmth in a record that is at-once propulsive yet patient, dark, and distant while warm and engaging. Vance's voice, a tinny yet warm throat-yell which bears an eerie resemblance to Jeff Buckley, sits astride Happy Abandon's intensely emotional music, which owes as much to the members' experience in theater, marching bands, and orchestras as it does to their myriad musical influences such as Sufjan Stevens, Andrew Bird, and The National. While full of songs about loss, Vance is quick to point out that Facepaint is not a breakup album. Rather, if the album were to have a subject, it would be the relationship a person has to loss and loneliness, which can manifest itself through breakups, homelessness, familial abandonment, and death. These relationships provide the outline for Facepaint, from the emotions they conjure to the settings in which they exist and the facepaint we all hide behind to make those heartbreaks a little more palatable.

"Kenny Roby is one of the best American songwriters of the last 20 years"

- Neal Casal (Chris Robinson Brotherhood/Circles Around The Sun)

"The world's a better place with Kenny Roby & 6 String Drag in it." - Steve Earle

"'Memories & Birds' by North Carolina songwriter Kenny Roby floored me" - Citizen Cope in American Songwriter

"So thrilled to have Kenny Roby & 6 String Drag back. They're as great as ever. Like reconnecting with

a long lost friend."

- Patterson Hood (Drive-By Truckers)

Roby is a genius and his work with 6 String Drag is the stuff of legends. Although they perform together

every now and then, this album serves as a reason why they should be more consistent in staying together

and playing such brilliant music. - SPILL MAGAZINE

North Carolina native and Americana pioneer Kenny Roby has been making records and performing on

stages for over 30 years. Early on, Roby’s punk band opened for Circles Jerks, 7 Seconds, Jane's Addiction

and Suicidal Tendencies. In late 1992, shortly after a relocating to Raleigh, NC Roby formed a more roots/

alt-country band, 6 String Drag which showcased his influences of Buck Owens, Neil Young alongside

Black Flag. The band eventually signed with Steve Earle's E-Squared Records and went on to tour with The

Jayhawks, Buddy Miller, Whiskeytown, Gillian Welch and David Rawlings.

Since 1999, Roby has released 4 solo records and 6SD reformed. In March of 2018 6SD released TOP OF

THE WORLD which received airplay on NPR, Sirius XM's Outlaw Country and press coverage in Rolling

Stone, All Music and No Depression.

After a critically acclaimed self-titled first album, 6 String Drag signed with alt-country godfather and outlaw

country music legend Steve Earle's E-Squared Records (Warner Brothers imprint) The band's second

record HIGH HAT was produced by Earle as well. 6 String Drag went on to open for and tour with acts such

as Earle, The Jayhawks, Buddy Miller, Whiskeytown, Blue Mountain, Gillian Welch and David Rawlings,

label-mates The V-Roys and many more. But a little more than a year after HIGH HAT was released and just

as the band started to gain wider recognition and beginning to grow their fanbase within the burgeoning

90's alt-country/roots rock scene as well as in national press and radio, the band split up.

Soon after the break-up Kenny Roby went on to record and release his first solo outing MERCURY'S

BLUES in Europe in 1999 and in the US in early 2000. Between 1999 and 2013 Roby went on to record

and release 4 solo records. Eventually 6 String Drag reformed in early 2014 and released their new

album ROOTS ROCK 'N' ROLL in early 2015. In March of 2018 the band released TOP OF THE WORLD to

more radio play on NPR, Sirius XM's Outlaw Country and press coverage in Rolling Stone, All Music, No

Depression et al and reissued a 20th anniversary release of HIGH HAT.

Roby is a songwriter's songwriter. He has been championed worldwide in the press, radio and by other

songwriters such as Steve Earle, Neal Casal, Citizen Cope, Patterson Hood (Drive-By Truckers) and even

had his songs covered by roots music legend Michael Hurley who was an integral part of the Holy Model

Rounders and was signed to Moses Asch to Folkways Records in the 1960s. Roby has signed multiple

publishing deals as a songwriter including a stint with Warner-Chapel Music.

In September 2019, Schoolkids Records will release TIRED OF FEELIN' GUILTY: 25 YEARS OF KENNY

ROBY & 6 STRING DRAG as Roby continues to tour worldwide.

NYC-based singer/songwriter Perry Serpa has possibly, for the very first time, brought to life a fictionally depicted album. The artist, in this case, is Tucker Crowe, the main character of Nick Hornby's celebrated novel Juiiet, Naked. Serpa takes his record's title from the name Hornby gave to its fictional tribute album and lifts the song titles, sequencing, couplets and influences laid out in the description of Crowe's tortured and lovesick opus. Guests include The Minus 5's Scott McCaughey, Laura Cantrell, Aja Warren and Edward Rogers. Wherefore Art Thou? coincides with Judd Apatow's screen adaptation of Juliet, Naked but is unrelated to the film.
