Grateful Dead
Dicks Picks Vol. 36 - The Spectrum, Philadelphia PA 9/ 21/ 72 [Limited Edition 7LP Box Set]
Dick's Picks Volume 36
In the Grateful Dead ?rmament, there are countless good shows, shining like stars in the sky. Then there are the great shows, those that shine the brightest. And then there are the truly transcendent shows, those that exert a gravitational pull-dare we say it, like a "Dark Star"-on all the other concerts from that particular year or tour. These are the nights that every Dead Head learns about right after getting on board the bus. and the September 21, 1972 performance at the Spectrum in Philadelphia is truly one of those nights. This is the concert that original Dead archivist Dick Latvala strongly considered to kick off the Dick's Picks series, and it's the one that ended it. It's one of those nights when every Garcia guitar solo tells a story, when the rhythm section is locked in like the gears on a Swiss watch, and when the band is repeatedly hitting its vocal harmonies dead-on. It's also a night when Bob Weir absolutely shreds, his unusual chord voicings and off-time guitar ?lls perfectly complementing Jerry's leads (the set also includes some highlights from the 9/3/72 show at Folsom Field in Boulder, CO). So when we at Real Gone Music were considering which Pick to put on vinyl next, the choice was pretty obvious. But to do this concert justice, we had to bring in the best. This 7-LP set is mastered for vinyl by Jeffrey Norman at Mockingbird Mastering from Bear's original tapes, which are absolutely brilliant in their clarity and immediacy. Lacquers are cut by Jeff Powell, who got his start at Memphis' legendary Ardent Studios and has worked with everybody from Bob Dylan to Gregg Allman to Irma Thomas. Pressed on 180-gram vinyl at Furnace Record Pressing, the vacuum-quiet test pressings were approved by engineer Norman, archivist David Lemieux, and Real Gone's own Gordon Anderson. And each of the seven LPs is housed inside a polyvinyl sleeve carefully nestled (with extra padding!) inside a two-piece hardshell box. We've also included a 4-page insert featuring, along with original photos and graphics and Bear's original notes, a word from Bear's son Star?nder Stanley on behalf of the Owsley Stanley Foundation, who kindly provided the tapes for our reissue. Limited to 2000 hand-numbered copies, this one's going to be a keepsake. Don't miss it.

“As a kid, I stumbled upon a copy of Gang of Four’s Entertainment! accidentally and it went on to become one of the most influential records of my life as a producer, lyricist and fan of music in general. Their sparse, unorthodox, riff heavy guitars and nasty, funky, in-the-pocket rhythm section drew me in, but it was their questioning of the world that kept me listening as I grew. I consider them a seminal band, whose influence and effect permeates the music world in a deeper way than many realize. Thank you, Gang of Four, for existing.” - EL-P (Run The Jewels)

Emancipation was as expansive an album as anything Prince had ever release. A triple album constituting exactly three hours of music, Emancipation found Prince celebrating the release of music solely on his terms. ""This is my most important record,"" he proclaimed upon its release. ""I'm free, and my music is free."" Much like Paisley Park, the recording complex in which Prince created Emancipation, the album represents the incredible variety of his influences and moods. Romance and family are key themes (""Somebody's Somebody,"" ""The Holy River,"" ""The Love We Make""), reflecting his recent marriage to back-up dancer and muse Mayte Garcia that year. Elsewhere, Prince reflects on technology (""My Computer"") and sex (""In This Bed <0> Scream""), and offers new, upbeat grooves (""Face Down,"" ""Jam Of The Year"") as well as four unique covers (Bonnie Raitt's ""I Can't Make You Love Me,"" the Philly soul classics ""Betcha By Golly Wow"" and ""La, La, La Means I Love U,"" Joan Osborne's then-recent rock hit ""One Of Us"").
Demon Records presents Distortion: 1989-1995, the first in a series of four expansive vinyl box sets chronicling the solo career of legendary American musician Bob Mould.
Bob Mould’s career began in 1979 with the iconic underground punk group Hüsker Dü before forming the beloved alternative rock band Sugar and releasing numerous critically acclaimed solo albums. Volume one in this new series covers 1989 to 1995, beginning with Mould’s first post Hüsker Dü album Workbook and continuing through to Sugar’s final studio album File Under: Easy Listening.
The Rolling Stones’ groundbreaking multi-platinum selling album Let It Bleed was released in late 1969, charting at #1 in the UK and #3 in the US. The Rolling Stones, at this point already a critically and commercially dominant force, composed and recorded their eighth long player (tenth for the U.S.) amidst both geopolitical and personal turmoil. The second of four Rolling Stones albums made with producer Jimmy Miller (Traffic, Blind Faith), Let It Bleed perfectly captures the ominous spirit of the times with “Gimme Shelter,” the opening track. The 2019 remaster has been engineered by eleven-time Grammy®-winning mastering engineer Bob Ludwig.
Let It Bleed (50th Anniversary Limited Deluxe Edition) includes the remastered album in Stereo and Mono on both vinyl and Hybrid SACD, and a reproduction of the 1969 7” mono single of “Honky Tonk Women”/ ”You Can’t Always Get What You Want,” in a picture sleeve. First time on vinyl. 6 disc box set. In looking at how this September 1997 tour was structured, this could have been a show to skip - or maybe not. This was the fourth show in a row to open the tour, on a Monday night, involved crossing an international border, at a real small place so it might be real crowded. All of that could keep some from making the trip, but for others, those were exactly the reasons to go...and possibly collect the rewards for doing so. The band just seems to have a knack to know when the fans have gone out of their way and really paid some dues to make it. Or when a local crowd gets it. In either case, and in terms of this Montreal 1997 show, both cases, Widespread Panic gets off on that and then seems to go that extra mile.
Sugar Hill Records was the birthplace label for hip hop. It gave listeners their first exposure to urban rhyming and scratching that transformed pop music during the ‘80s. Many of the 12” singles and vinyl versions of their classics have been out of print for years, missing the rise of hip hop during the 80’s and 90’s. This 12” boxset will not only be a must have for the listeners who grew up on the music, but for the DJ’s to be able to go back to the beginning and mix each strategically placed single into their own vinyl DJ set . This 6 Disc Vinyl 12” Boxed set will incorporate all of the label’s classic A-sides - many in their full length mixes. We will have a small summary of the label and how it changed hip hop as liners and the boxed set will be packaged in a beautiful Sugar Hill Records slip case that pays tribute to the old school “feel” of the generation. In addition to the vinyl boxed set, we will be offering a special “DJ” version for digital download that will be a 1 hour and 17 minute non-stop “party mix” using each of the tracks, in their respectable order, with no breaks so it can be played at any party from start to finish, giving the party a DJ without an actual DJ present! Limited to 2000 copies worldwide
1979 was MOTÖRHEAD year – the year of ‘Overkill’ and ‘Bomber’. MOTÖRHEAD, the loudest band in the world, with the power and force of a hundred pneumatic drills they destroyed the nation over and again and no-one, repeat no-one, remained unaffected by them – everyone was torn limb from limb. The albums ‘Overkill’ and ‘Bomber’ were ten times more powerful than their first album ‘Motörhead’, which was a killer in itself. The production was in the capable and experienced hands of one Jimmy Miller, whose previous successes had been with the likes of the Rolling Stones. He brought out the very best in the boys and the total effect was lethal. ‘Overkill’ and ‘Bomber’ are real skullcrackers, brain damaging to the nth degree and with the hit singles ‘Overkill’, ‘No Class’ and ‘Bomber’ you can doubtless guess the destroying effect of the whole affair. That’s Motörhead, straight, basic, down to earth rock and roll, with absolutely no holds barred.
“The definitive anthology of the company that helped bring reggae and dancehall to the US and beyond.” Down In Jamaica: 40 Years of VP Records is a 94-track, deluxe, multi-format box set with 24 page booklet and art cards detailing the hits, the rarities, and the history of the world's largest reggae label. Featuring 101 different artists, Down In Jamaica tells this story in detail through a chronological survey of the key songs that helped define the company from early singles on obscure sublabels to the well-known VP Records brand that brought Beenie Man, Sean Paul, Wayne Wonder, and others into the international mainstream. Curated by Carter Van Pelt, VP Records’ Director Of Catalog Development, the set contains four 7-inch singles, four 12-inch singles, and four CDs, the first configuration of its kind in a box set package. The singles format was the dominant vehicle for Jamaican music from its inception, and the collection tells the story almost entirely from singles. The set takes its name from Red Fox and Naturalee’s 1989 single.
Limited five 180gm colored vinyl LP set. Hailing from the unlikely setting of St. Albans, The Zombies burst onto the UK and US pop scene in August 1964 with the smash hit "She's Not There", penned by keyboard player Rod Argent. Colin Blunstone's breathy vocals set the record apart from the band's contemporaries, and they followed it up with a second hit in "Tell Her No". Their debut album Begin Here was released on the Decca label in 1965. Despite issuing several more excellent singles, further chart success eluded the band, although Dusty Springfield covered Argent's "If It Don't Work Out" (which the band also recorded). The Zombies signed to CBS in 1967 and recorded a new album over the summer, producing the sessions at Abbey Road and Olympic Studios themselves. The result was the classic Odessey And Oracle, but by the time the album was released in April 1968, the band had split up. "Time Of The Season" went on to be a huge hit in the US in 1969, selling over a million copies. This set is book-ended by the two 'proper' albums that the band recorded, Begin Here and Odessey And Oracle. In between, Early Days and Continue Here round up the band's various A-sides, B-sides and EP tracks. The fourth LP faithfully recreates the R.I.P. album, an intended posthumous release of overdubbed outtakes that was shelved when new band Argent emerged from the ashes of The Zombies. The whole set is housed in a rigid slipcase. The inner sleeves include photos from designer Phil Smee's extensive collection, while the albums are pressed on different coloured vinyl.
